Daily brief (11/9): Top picks from the Springfield media

Mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Today begins with a wind chill value as low as 40.  It will be breezy, with a south wind 16 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Temperatures will be quite warm both Friday and Saturday topping out in the 70-75 range over most of the region.

A cold front slowly pushes across the Ozarks on Sunday resulting in periods of heavy rain.  I still think a few spots may get more than two inches of rain before all is said and done on Monday morning.  Temperatures Sunday will begin mild but fall off late in the day as the cold air makes progress south.

The cold air may catch up with the departing moisture to produce a few snow flurries early Monday.  The chance of this happening is slim and even if we do see a few flakes they will not add up or stick around.  Cold air will pour in through the day and highs should be limited to low 40s at best.

Tuesday will be a very cold morning with lows in the mid 20s or colder!

Today’s picks

  • News-Leader: Military service honored at Parkview High event. Parkview students invited grandparents and neighbors. Their teachers invited husbands and parents. In all, more than three dozen veterans and active members of the U.S. Armed Forces were seated in the center of the packed south gym. Their service and sacrifies were honored during the special one-hour assembly. Parkview organizes one every other year and fills it with patriotic music, the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem. This year, students shared a history of Veterans Day and foreign wars. There was a bugle call and recognition of the individual men and women – with a connection to Parkview – who have served this country.
  • KSPR: Holiday mail rush is right around the corner. The holiday mail rush is coming soon, and the U.S. Postal Service has announced what you need to know about this year’s key dates. Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe says one big date to remember this holiday season is December 17th. He says that’s the busiest mailing day of the year for holiday cards and packages. Another important date is December 22nd, the last day to send Express Mail to make sure it gets delivered on Christmas Day. You can also do a lot of things online, too such as printing your own labels and buying postage online. For more information, click here.
  • KSPR: Check your pantry: Nesquik drink mix is being recalled. Nestle is recalling a popular drink mix. More than 200,000 canisters of Nesquik is being recalled because of possible salmonella contamination. The bottom of the recalled canisters say they are best to use by October 2014. Two of the smaller containers have a promotion for the Disney movie “Wreck-It Ralph” on the side.
