Daily brief (10/26): Top picks from the Springfield media

Mostly sunny, with a high near 50.

Temperatures are much colder this morning with readings near 40, clouds, and a north wind. The clouds will break up some today but even still highs will only be near 50 in much of the region.

By tonight the clouds will leave and high pressure will build through the central US, pushing cold air into the Ozarks.

By Saturday and Sunday mornings lows will be in the 20s and low 30s with a freeze likely nearly area-wide.  Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 52.

It sill be  chilly through much of next week with below-average highs and lows.

Today’s picks

  • News-Leader: Ghost bike placed in memory of Springfield bicyclist. Springfield resident Phillip Davis said that he didn’t know Eric H. Floyd, who was hit by a tractor-trailer while crossing Glenstone from the west, but that he was inspired to place the memorial as a fellow bicyclist. About 20 people attended the short ceremony that accompanied the placement of the bike — an assortment of friends who knew Floyd and cyclists who didn’t. Floyd, 32, had worked at Farmers Gastropub in downtown Springfield until August. (Other coverage: OzarksFirst)
  • KY3: Free Halloween fun in Springfield for families on Friday. The Pat Jones YMCA and G. Pearson Ward YMCA in Springfield are hosting their free, annual Boo Bash celebrations on Friday, Oct. 26, from 6-8 p.m. Both Y locations will have a sock hop, haunted maze, bounce houses, a fortune teller, games, tons of candy, and more. The Jones YMCA is located at 1901 E. Republic Road. The Ward YMCA is located at 417 S. Jefferson in downtown Springfield.
  • KSPR: Part of Chestnut Expressway will close for road work this weekend. Chestnut Expressway under Highway 65 in east Springfield will be closed Friday night at 8 p.m. through early Monday morning at 6 a.m. It’s all to make progress on changing the intersection into a diverging diamond, which is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
