Daily brief (10/7): Top picks from the Springfield media

Patchy frost before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 52. Wind chill values as low as 30 early.

Temperatures will drop below the freezing point at many spots across the Ozarks tonight.  There have been a few light rain showers across the Ozarks today and even some sleet was reported!  This activity looks to continue through the evening with some isolated spots of light rain or sleet.  Clouds will gradually decrease overnight with low temperatures dropping below 32 degrees in most of our Missouri counties.

Sunshine will return on Sunday and temperatures could rebound into the middle 50s for highs and 40s for lows.

Columbus day brings sunny skies, with a high near 62. Wind chill values as low as 29 early.

Starting on Tuesday, high temperatures return to either side of 70 degrees.  Isolated rain showers and cloudy skies look likely for much of the workweek.

  • Ky3: Organizations provide emergency shelter during first frost.  It’s expected to drop into the 20s in some places.  A few shelters are open for people needing a warm place. Victory Square on Commercial Street helps homeless men. The building has about 150 beds. Only about a dozen are still available.
  • [Election]OzarksFirst: Senator makes push through The Ozarks in race to November. Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) visited several cities in the Ozarks as part of her reelection campaign. McCaskill’s lead is currently a six point spread above Akin, according to a Rasmussen poll released this week.
  • KY3: Hundreds pack into Square for the Taste of Springfield. More than 30 of the city’s restaurants were dishing out samples of their cuisine for folks to try.  The food included everything from barbecue to brats to burger and beer to wash it all down. (Other coverage: News-leader)
