Daily brief (8/22): Top picks from the Springfield media

Elevated fire weather conditions through Thursday with a serious ongoing drought.  Sunny and hot, with a high near 92.

Tonight is clear with a low near 61.  The rest of the week is much of the same with the first chance of thunderstorms hits Saturday after 8am.

  • [Election]News-Leader: Akin supports are not ready to throw in the towel. Akin had until 5 p.m., Tuesday to drop out of the race without needing a court order. He now has until Sept. 25 to officially exit the race. (Other coverage: KSPR, KY3, OzarksFirst)
  • KY3: Gender identity, gay bill could be sent to Springfield voters. City leaders took up the controversial proposal that would add sexual orientation to the city’s nondiscrimination ordinance. (Other coverage: News-Leader)
  • KSMU: Missouri State University sets an example in water conservation. Missouri State University and other universities in Springfield are participating in a voluntary commitment to conserve water.
