Today’s picks

  • KSPR: Move-in day for college freshman is Friday.  College freshman move into their new home this Friday. Classes begin August 20.  (Other coverage: OzarksFirst)
  • OzarksFirst: Sober driving crackdown begins this weekend.  Four states have unified efforts to stop drinking and driving.  “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” mobilization will take place August 17 to September 3.  (Other coverage:  KSPR)
  • News-leader: Nixa, Ozark and Willard schools are top performers in MAP testing. Nixa had the best scores in communication arts and math on Missouri Assessment Program tests for 2011-2012. The state program to improve schools will use recent test scores and graduation rates to identify schools that are “models of excellence” and also schools that are low-performing or have large achievement gaps.
  • KY3: Springfield fire engines are going ‘retro’.  New studies show the color of the fire engine hasn’t mattered in preventing motor vehicle accidents as previously believed.   Since it would cost $30,000 a piece to repaint the engines, the department is simply cycling new red engines in when the yellow ones retired.  The first four have already been ordered and are expected to be in service this January.
