Today will be a mostly sunny, mostly beautiful start to the week. A high of 72 is expected, and the low will dip to 49 tonight.

  • News-Leader: Mayor resigns suddenly during council meeting. Mayor Jim O’Neal, who was elected in 2009 and re-elected in 2011, abruptly resigned at Monday’s City Council meeting. The long, contentious meeting tackled amendments to Springfield’s smoking ban. Mayor Pro Tem Bob Stephens will serve as interim mayor.   • OzarksFirst: More elk to arrive in Missouri. The Missouri Department of Conservation plans to add 35 more elk to the Peck Ranch Conservation Area, which touches parts of Reynolds, Carter, and Shannon counties.
  • KSPR: Free tire disposal on Saturday. Through a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the Community Partnership of the Ozarks will collect old tires for free disposal at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds. The dropoff will last from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • KY3: Branson man hoping to build 200-foot-high cross. Kerry Brown hopes to build a 200-foot-tall cross on U.S. 65 just north of Branson. He has the plans approved, but he must raise millions in donations in order to build his dream.
  • KSMU: MSU explains security warning. After a Saturday shooting near campus, the Missouri State University Safety and Security Department issued campuswide e-mails about the homicide. The attack’s proximity to campus prompted the warning.
