Daily brief (4/9): Top picks from the Springfield media

SunnyToday will be a nice start to the week, with sunny skies and a high of 71. Tonight’s low will dip to 45.

Tomorrow and Wednesday will be mostly sunny, and highs will be in the mid to upper 60s. Thursday, a 30 percent chance of rain enters the forecast, and storms are likely on Friday.

In media news, longtime News-Leader photojournalist Bob Linder, who has been with the paper for 40 years, will be retiring. He has won numerous awards and accolades for his work over the years, and is one of the finest journalists I’ve had the honor of working with.

  • News-Leader: Strong neighborhoods goal of new project. The Neighbor for Neighbor project, which will begin in the Robberson and Weller neighborhoods in north Springfield, hopes to take on crime, economic problems, and other issues facing residents.
  • News-Leader: City Council to take up smoking-ban changes tonight. The City Council tonight will be considering amendments to Springfield’s smoking ban, including allowing smoking in dedicated tobacco shops and electronic cigarettes.
  • KSPR: MoDOT construction will block some routes in Christian, Polk counties. Route OO in Christian County and Routes BB and 123 in Polk County will be closed for part of today for repair and construction work.
  • KY3: Missouri Lottery distributes education money. The Missouri Lottery sets record for monthly payment to schools, sending more than $30 million to education. The large payment came in part from the spike in interest caused by the Mega Millions jackpot.
  • OzarksFirst: Fans snapping up Kinkade painting after artist’s death. Thomas Kinkade, the California-based artist who has a gallery in Branson, died this weekend, and the gallery has been fielding many phone calls from fans.
