Daily brief (1/29): Top picks from the Springfield media

We’ll be treated to another mild January day in the Ozarks today. Skies will remain sunny, and the high will be 54.

It will be unseasonably warm this week, with highs in the 50s and 60s, but winds will be gusty, reaching speeds of up to 30 mph on Monday and Tuesday.

Today’s picks

  • OzarksFirst: Police arrest ‘person of interest’ in home invasion. Springfield police arrested Branden Slavens, 28, on Saturday as a “person of interest” in connection with the home invasion and assault of an elderly couple in Greene County. He has not been charged with a crime in connection with the case, though. (Other coverage: KSPR, KY3, News-Leader)
  • OzarksFirst: Races, issues on Feb. 7 ballot. Springfield residents will be voting on an ordinance requiring all employers to check employees through the federal E-Verify system, while other cities such as Willard and Republic have tax issues on the ballot. The presidential primary vote will be on the ballot, although Missouri Republicans are using a caucus this year to choose their delegates. • News-Leader: Rise in burglaries leads to alternate crime-fighting tactics. The Greene County Sheriff hopes blinking electronic signs and citizen reports will help curb the rise in burglaries in the county.
  • KSPR: ‘Grandparent scam’ targeting older citizens in the Ozarks. Springfield police are warning residents of what they call ‘the grandparent scam.’ Someone posing as a family member will call and ask for money to be wired to help get a friend or other family member out of jail.
