Daily brief (1/26): Top picks from the Springfield media

A cloudy start will give way to clearing skies and a high of 50. Tonight will be mostly clear and cold, with the low dipping into the upper 20s.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny, and the high will peak at 54. The weekend should be sunny, but highs will return to seasonable norms in the 40s.

  • News-Leader: City report blames Expo failure on Hammons management. In a memo compiled for Councilman Tom Bieker, city staff said John Q. Hammons Hotels, which manages the Expo Center, did not market the center to its potential. The management also failed to file regular reports with the city.
  • KY3: Evangel graduate killed in Afghanistan. Army 1st Lt. David Johnson, who had been a leader in Evangel’s ROTC program, was killed Wednesday in action in Afghanistan.
  • OzarksFirst: Children displaced by fire thank firefighters who saved them. Firefighters from the Springfield department’s Station No. 1 were reunited Wednesday at Cox North with some of the children they saved from the Missouri Hotel fire. (Other coverage: KSPR, KY3, News-Leader)
  • KSMU: Three meetings to focus on area’s natural resources. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan to hold three meetings in the next week in southwest Missouri about a plan to protect natural resources harmed by hazardous substances. Springfield’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Monday at the Library Center (4653 S. Campbell Ave.).
  • KSPR: Fort Leonard Wood earns spot on Forbes list. Fort Leonard Wood is listed among the top-five fastest-growing communities in a Forbes list.
