Daily brief (6/26): Top picks from the Springfield media

Today is expected to be one of the hottest yet this summer, with a high of 95 and a heat index approaching 100.

It will be sunny, but a wind with gusts of up to 22 mph should provide a little relief. Tonight will be mostly clear with a low around 73.

Tomorrow, a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms moves into the forecast, mainly after 1 p.m. It will be another hot one, with a high of 93.

  • News-Leader: Joplin copes with loss, grief. So far, 158 people have died as a result of the May 22 tornado. The victims ranged in age from 13 months to 94 years. (Other Joplin coverage: Humane Society holds adopt-a-thon: KY3; Ways to help: OzarksFirst)
  • OzarksFirst [KOLR/KSFX]: Fourth of July celebrations in the Ozarks. College of the Ozarks will be hosting a free celebration tonight with music and a fireworks display after dark. Other cities will be celebrating on July 2; several, however, are planning their celebrations on the Fourth.
  • KSMU: Springfield asks residents to identify road, sidewalk improvements. Springfield officials are asking the public to help determine which infrastructure improvements are most needed in the city.
  • News-Leader: Retransmission fees at the heart of Fox/KSFX split. KSFX’s parent company, Nexstar Broadcasting, battled with Fox Broadcasting Co. over retransmission fees that KSFX receives from cable and satellite companies who have KSFX in their channel lineups.
