Daily brief (2/23): Top picks from the Springfield media

ShowersMore rain is on the way. There’s a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today, with a high of 53 expected.

Tonight and tomorrow will be more of the same, with rain likely. By Friday, high temperatures are expected to dip back to the 40s.

Today’s picks:

  • News-Leader: Turnout sparse for election. Less than 3 percent of Springfield’s voters went to the polls Tuesday for the primary election. Both incumbent council members survived the primary: Doug Burlison will face Christopher Donegan for the open general council seat, and Jerry Compton will square off against Stephen Keith Pennington in the April election.   • KY3: Construction projects pop up around Springfield. New commercial buildings and retailers — including a new Hy-Vee grocery store — are under construction in the city.
  • KSPR: Marionville fires court administrator. The city has fired its court administrator, who is responsible for collecting fines and setting the municipal court docket, and has begun an investigation.
  • News-Leader: Council approves economic incentives, urban deer hunt. The Springfield City Council approved a new policy for using economic incentives at Tuesday’s meeting. It also signed off on an urban deer hunt (bow only) and  a $108,000 settlement with the city’s red-light camera vendor. (Other coverage: KY3, OzarksFirst)
  • KSMU: Historic books from Thomas Jefferson’s private library discovered. Washington University in St. Louis has discovered that a book donation from 1880 contained 74 volumes from the president’s library.
