Springfield City Council to discuss smoking proposal

The Springfield City Council meets at 6:30 tonight (June 28) at City Hall to discuss the proposed smoking ordinance.

The News-Leader featured a preview piece in today’s edition. Several commenters offered links to stories from Columbia (from the Columbia Daily Tribune, Vox magazine and the Missourian), where a citywide smoking ban has been in force since January 2007.

On its June 27 newscast, KSPR highlighted the owner of Just for Him, who would have to shut down his smoking room if the ordinance passes.

KOLR-10‘s newscast this morning reported, “People fuming over a proposed smoking ban in Springfield will have their first chance to speak out tonight,” although it quoted no opponents in its story. It should be noted people supporting the ban will have their chance to speak in favor of the proposal tonight as well.

We encourage your comments here. Please offer links to pertinent information, reports, and studies; the more information we can provide, the better the discussion will be.

  1. What is happening to freedom? If someone doesn’t want to go to a smoky place, they don’t have to do it. I believe Mr. O’Neal, while well-intentioned, is overstepping what the boundaries of the office should be.
