New Springfield smoking ban proposed

Springfield, Missouri, has restarted the discussion over banning smoking in public places.

At a June 10 press conference, the One Air Alliance — a group supporting an ordinance to ban smoking in all indoor public places — announced the proposal would be introduced at the June 28 City Council meeting. Springfield Mayor Jim O’Neal and Kevin Gipson, director of the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, spoke during the kickoff event as well.

In 2003, the City Council passed an ordinance that prohibited smoking in restaurants, but many exemptions allowed smokers to light up in several establishments (PDF).

One Air Alliance has begun a Facebook page.
